Room by Emma Donoghue

I can't tell you the last time I read through an entire book in less than 24 hours. Oh wait, I just did. With Room. Dear heavens this book is good. So much so that I bought it at Target 2 weeks ago and put it in the "on deck" pile. Then I bought it again in the Toronto airport, forgetting I had purchased it. I have two copies. I am not mad at it. It's that good.

You know the Jaycee Dugard story right? This is similar in some ways. Told from the view of 5 year old, Jack, this book follows the life of he and his mom. They live in a room. She was kidnapped at age 19. Raped almost nightly, eventually Jack was born. Jack believes that the room is the entire world. Nothing exists outside of it. He watches TV and thinks it's all make believe. He thinks anything "Old Nick" brings them actually comes from God. He is smart. He is loving. He is adorable. Ma makes up games and adventures for them to pass the time, to keep him safe, to provide fun and to educate him. Ma is an amazing ma.

And then, they come up with a plan for "The Great Escape."
Try to open this book, read a few pages and then put it down. You won't be able to. This book awakened a lot of emotions in me. I want more of it. I want to know Jack.
Read it. I can lend you a couple of copies.

I read this book in 3 days...the same three days I had back to back to back 12 hour shifts. I loved the language. I loved the characters. I love the way it made me think about nature v. nurture in developing parenting styles. I oddly could relate. I loved this book. (and as a result I loved the Diane Sawyer interview with Jaycee).
