I picked this book up in an airport and was hooked instantly. So much that I considered pulling an all-nighter to finish it.
The story revolves around an English newspaper based in Italy. This paper, the newsroom and the constantly changing industry serve as a background in which we are introduced to a variety of characters. Each chapter presents their individual stories, all of them linking back to the common thread of the paper.
And each story is captivating. The editor, the foreign correspondent, the free-lance writer, copy-editor, obituary writer, the president of the paper - we learn about their lives, their trials and their occasional rewards.
I never wanted the chapters to end, they left me wanting more.
It's hard to believe that this is Rachman's freshman novel. His writing is brilliant and comes at a great time, when we all witness the demise of the printed newspaper.
I will say, I didn't love the ending. But after some time away from the emotions I conjured up for each of the characters, I realize that it ended with purpose. It may not be the outcome I wanted, but it was fitting.
You have to read this. It won't take you long, but you will be fully absorbed into the plot instantly.
