In 1996, TWA 800 exploded into the sky. All passengers perished in the water along Long Island's coast and the plane was eventually ruled as having "mechanical failure." However, over 200 witnesses swear to seeing something resembling a missile launching through the night sky towards the plane before it exploded. As a result, many conspiracy theories have surfaced.
Demille takes on these theories as he introduces husband and wife, Kate and Corey. Both working for the government, Kate was assigned the crash investigation. At the five year anniversary of the tragedy, she enlists the help of her husband to research the theory that someone struck the plane, causing it to crash. Her main point of evidence is a picnic scene and a video camera lens cover, left at the beach the night the plane crashed. She believes that a couple was having an affair, videotaping themselves and witnessed the accident. As a result, the entire missile strike and plane crash could be captured on video.
Corey and Kate are met with extreme resistance by the FBI as they continue to look into the case. The only way they are going to get anywhere and locate this couple is if they do it behind the government's backs, putting both their careers and their lives at stake.
The story is fascinating and I have done some research on the TWA 800 crash since I completed the book. There are plenty of conspiracy websites out there, still rebutting the government conclusion of mechanical failure. Many people feel the real cause of the explosion is known and is just covered up by the government. Regardless, this fiction work by Demille will strike your interest and keep your attention.
